    The entirety of the Old English canon is terrible. Beowulf is not good by modern standards, it's only recognized as such because in its original language the alliteration was incredibly mellifluous when performed orally. When transliterated into modern English, much of that is lost and the other rhetorical devices it uses such as kenning and metonymy have all the creativity of something your average third grader could devise.

    I enjoy Beowulf for what it is, but let's not pretend that it or any of the extant works written in Old English are objectively good pieces of writing in 2016.
